Most breakages during a move happen because fragile items were packed loosely, not because of the journey itself. With the right materials and a few simple habits, you can protect your most delicate belongings.
Materials you need
- Strong cartons in small and medium sizes (heavy items go in small cartons)
- Bubble wrap and packing paper
- Corrugated cardboard sheets for flat items like mirrors and table tops
- Good-quality packing tape and a marker
- Fragile and "This side up" labels
Plates and crockery
Wrap each plate individually and pack them standing on edge, like files in a drawer, rather than flat in a stack. Fill empty spaces with crumpled paper so nothing moves when you gently shake the carton.
Glasses and cups
Stuff the inside with paper, wrap the outside, and place them upright. Use carton dividers if you have them. Put the heaviest items at the bottom.
Mirrors, glass tops and frames
Tape an "X" across the glass to hold pieces together if it cracks, cover with bubble wrap and sandwich it between cardboard sheets. Always mark which way is up – just as the dining table in the photo above is labelled "TOP".
TVs and electronics
Use the original box if you still have it. Otherwise, wrap the screen with a soft cloth, then bubble wrap, then cardboard. Keep remotes and cables in a labelled bag taped to the unit.
Label everything
Write the room name, "FRAGILE" and an arrow for the upright direction on at least two sides of every carton. It helps the loading team place cartons correctly in the vehicle.
When to call professionals
Large glass items, heavy appliances and antique furniture are best left to trained packers. See how we handle them on our packing and unpacking services page.
