A house shift has many small tasks that are easy to forget. This checklist breaks them into weeks so the work is spread out and moving day feels calm.
Three to four weeks before
- Fix your moving date. Avoid days when your street or the destination area has a festival, procession or market day.
- Walk through each room and decide what to keep, sell, donate or discard. Fewer items means a faster, cheaper move.
- Contact your movers with a list of large items and get a quotation. See our house shifting services.
- If you are renting, inform your owner and plan the handover and deposit.
Two weeks before
- Request transfer or closure of electricity, water, gas, internet and DTH connections.
- Update your address with the bank, school, employer and delivery apps.
- Use up groceries and frozen food rather than packing them.
- If your new home is not ready, ask about temporary storage.
One week before
- Pack items you rarely use – books, seasonal clothes, decorative pieces.
- Collect important documents, jewellery and valuables in one bag that stays with you.
- Service the AC or arrange for it to be uninstalled by a technician if required.
- Confirm lift booking and parking at both apartments.
Two days before
- Defrost and dry the refrigerator; drain the washing machine.
- Pack an essentials bag: clothes for two days, medicines, chargers, toiletries, basic utensils.
- Take photos of the wiring behind the TV and computer to reconnect easily.
Moving day
- Be present to point out fragile items and anything that should not be packed.
- Check each room, cupboard and loft before the vehicle leaves.
- Read the meter readings and hand over keys as agreed.
At the new home
- Direct cartons to the right rooms using the labels.
- Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first.
- Check furniture and appliances before the team leaves.
